There is a “rape park” in almost every city. Women’s fear and vulnerablity in public space is universal and a subject of society - but aas well yours and ine. The subject matter of Fear and Gender in Public Space is sexual violence in public space. Mapping personal and political understandings and experiences of fear in public space, it strives for interdisciplinary dialogues among local and international perspectives. The project and educational platfrom investigates art in the public realm and the power of artistic practices to reasearch and effect civic concerns. As a radical force it attempts to serve as a forum for gathering civic engagement and create awareness towards political and social change for gender equality in the public realm.


Fear and Gender in Public Space at the University of San Francisco , Art + Architecture Department April 2008

The course is part of an international curatorial/research project by Vernoica Wiman call Fear and Gender in Public Space taking loval perspectives from a multitude of global contexts as a starting point. The course unfolds in four workshops. Through dialogues with local womens organizations, cultural producers and politicians as well as methods of hand made communication, we will create awareness of and responses to fear and gender in public spaces in San Francisco.
